How Much? 140 Characters Worth
Written by Michael Koby on March 4, 2008 – 1:03 amYesterday, I listened to the latest episode of TWiT (This Week in Tech), episode 134 to be exact. In this episode, the question was asked, is there value in these 140 character message conversations being had on the likes of Twitter, Jaiku, & Pownce? One would think that 140 characters is not a lot of space to say anything in but if you really sit and think about it, you do it everytime you send a text message. Can you same something worth while in a text message? Most of you will answer "Yes" to that question. So it stands to reason that valuable conversations can be had in short, 140 character messages.

People Down on Pownce
Written by Michael Koby on February 28, 2008 – 12:51 am
Yesterday, TechCrunch posted a note about micro-blogging website, Pownce releasing an updated API to programmers this coming Friday. The comments seem to be swayed towards most people disliking Pownce. People saying things like "Let it die" and "I can do this through email, im, or something else" and I think people are either a) missing the point or b) to set in their twittering ways to give anything else a shot.
The "let it die" comments I will leave be. These people offer no reason as to why TechCrunch should stop writing about the still very much active service, they just want to troll. It is the other set of comments I want address. Those comments that say things like, "I can do this with email or instant messaging. Why do I need Pownce?" seem to really be forgetting one thing the internet is about, choice.

What’s the Point of Protecting Twitter Updates?
Written by Michael Koby on February 23, 2008 – 6:47 pmI was randomly searching for people to follow on Twitter. Decided I would type in “Houston, TX” since I live in the Houston area so I could follow some local folks. Start looking through the 21 pages of results and I find at least two or three people on every page have their updates protected.
What’s the point?
I mean a part of me gets it. You don’t want the entire world to read your updates. But at the same time, why sign up for an overly social site if you’re going to basically be anti-social? It seems counter-productive to me. Maybe, I’m just a little more open with my updates, but I also wouldn’t post something that I was not comfortable with the whole world knowing anyway. I guess I’m just careful like that.
Anyone have any thoughts on this matter? Are you someone who has their Twitter updates set to private? If so, why? I would really like to know and understand.

Thrifty Domestica Thinks “Micro-blogging is for Nerds”
Written by Michael Koby on February 19, 2008 – 8:24 pmMy good friend Rachel over at the website, Thrifty Domestica got into a discussion about micro-blogging today. When I asked her if she was going to start micro-blogging, she told me that she was going to write a post about how ridiculous micro-blogging was. I told her “if you write it, I’ll link it” and so here we are. Rachel’s thoughts on micro-blogging.
In response, I think that she understands the point, but doesn’t understand the conversation aspect of it. When you record those little thoughts that one can’t always pan out into a full fledge 500-ish word blog post, someone might become inspired and make that post for you. That person might have a perspective that you don’t have. I know that there are a lot of wasted ideas out there, heck there are several a day that don’t make it to here from my end.
Either way, it’s interesting food for thought. Check out the post, leave a comment your two.
